Thinking through making

SPRING/SUMMER 2023 ︎︎︎ Thinking through making

Look up. ‘Our Common Mercies’ is a project with a new approach for us and Modern Painters, New Decorators. We documented and participated in.

Ursula, David, Issie, Ama, Caitlin, Matheus in our living room, typing on our local server to share ideas.

It’s a good time to break out of same work styles. Not overly refined this time. Collaborative, colourful.

Corita’s rules for making:
1. Find a place you trust and then try trusting it for a while
4. Consider everything an experiment
6. Nothing is a mistake… there’s only make. ETC.

We’re breaking all the rules. Even our own. How do we do that?
A series of forums - the process of making with no fixed outcome: mantras, manhole covers, optimism, hunched over a broken risograph machine, protest banner.

Talk about where we live, what future you imagine, what is hope, the second naivety: stick it up on the wall, take it down again. We never finished the banner. Put it in the show anyway. People have come into the space since then. Made, talked, added to the walls of the show. Looks different every time I see it.
