A warm welcome

SPRING/SUMMER 2024 ︎︎︎ A warm welcome

Baca is a charity who work to provide a safe place for every child refugee to heal and the freedom to build a better future. We’ve been working with them since the end of 2023 to represent the work that they do through short films and photography.

The work that Baca do to provide a place of refreshment for unaccompanied children who have arrived in the UK after dangerous journeys from and through unsafe environments is incredible. I’ve personally really benefited from learning about it all – particularly by spending time with the young people on country walks, in the community centre, and over several shared meals crowded around their dinner tables.

For this film, Baca wanted to highlight some of what is easy to miss about those seeking asylum – the journey they have taken before finding themselves in the UK.
Solomon described the challenges and insecurity of growing up on the move; sleeping rough, making dangerous sea crossings, being imprisoned and living without the protection of parents or government.

Jimmy talked about the possibility of these young lives being changed because they are welcomed – a crucial yet beautiful vision of how a local community can receive people into itself, and in turn become an extended family.
